For those who have been following the series, The Makers, this is BOOK 5. The Preface is not for you, as you have already read all that it contains. Also you have seen the Glossary many times before.
HOWEVER, this book can be read stand-alone without having to read the previous books. The Preface is for you, to bring you up-to-date on the story, albeit in a very concise and limited form. There is no adequate substitute for reading all the books. You might also wish to consult the Glossary of Technical Terms, the last chapter, for useful information. It is a unique feature not found in any other Science Fiction book, at least none that I have ever seen.
The snippet below from Chapter 7 will give you an idea of the main subject of this book.
“The Chief Maker addressed the expanded Confederation. (Of course, you know that the Makers are an ancient alien race with 150 million year history. They have made first contact with humanity to be of help. Soon the Earth joins the Confederation of Free Intelligent Sentients.)
‘Welcome members and provisional members. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to attend. We badly need your advice and consent on a difficult matter that now faces us. As you know with good intentions but bad results, we have stumbled across an unusual neighbor in our galaxy, a neighbor that is clearly hostile to us, that it calls non machines as opposed to their being machines. They regard us as dirty and messy as opposed to themselves, machines that they claim are clean. As a result, they claim to be bound to kill us and steal our minerals which they apparently use to construct more machines. I am sure you join me in strongly objecting to such a future.
‘As I am sure you also know that because we were not fully prepared, the machines attacked the Earth twice, the second time successfully and destroyed much of the planet before we could drive them away. It has taken five years with a great deal of help from Earth’s neighbors, to whom we are intensely grateful, to repair most of the damage.
‘The question before us is how to handle these uncivilized and boorish neighbors?”

I've really enjoyed reading the entire Maker series. I like how the story flow's and keep the action going without the burden of trying to build the characters life from start to finish. The galaxy view is large, now with the next series devulging into brane warfware, the story is really going to get interesting. Keep the series coming Mr. Cohen, you have a dedicated fan who's enjoying reading your work.Product details

Great read some of the names for places seems a little to simple but overall a great series keep them coming
I am caught up so far as I know, am wondering if there will be more? Very Good read.
The story line continues to hold my interest. Wish there was more meat to the story sometimes. I was happy to see less time spent on fleet statistics, but there were fewer battles.
The writing is like someone reciting history, rather than telling a story. I find the whole series as too impersonal. I was hoping that the writing would get better I'm through spending my money and wondering what took me so long.
Book was good but would not call it great. The plot was predictable and too much repeating of information from the other books. At the price I paid on was worth it and fun to read, at 7.99 not so much.
The plot of the story is brilliant. Very intelligently put together. I find Mr. Cohens writing style somewhat simplistic, more like a synopsis rather than a Hollywood movie production. Still very well written. I've seen bad reviews on this and feel they are undeserved. I truly liked the books and hope there are more in the future.
In order for a series to be perfect, it must contain one of two elements good technology or a sustainable development or both. This series kept falling short in one or the other, great start but the author seemed just interested in finishing, not keeping the reader's mind occupied. think the author has the potential to do even better.
